The default install of Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) does not show the network shares mounted on the Desktop. To change this behavior, go to Finder -> Preferences -> General and Check the box “Connected servers”. Now when you connect to a network share etc, you will get a hard drive icon appear on the Desktop.
