The October edition of the NetApp Tech ONTAP features the release of an online de-duplication calculator. It is a nice looking web application by NetApp. The app is featured on its own URL as well. Go to http://www.dedupecalc.com/ to check it out.

I plugged in some numbers to see what the calculator does. First off, I noticed that you really did not need to answer 1) and 2). Leave the selection as “Select Backup Application” and “Select Vendor”, it won’t complain. Accepting the form default values, which are set to Weekly and Incremental backup policies, 60 days of retention and 1% average change rate, I hit “Calculate”. It estimates that I can realize an annual savings ration of 13:1.
