If you’ve got an older model filer, such as FAS880 and you are one of the lucky guys to purchase a FAS6070, you are not that lucky after all. Turn out that the 7.2 ONTAP dropped support for 880. So how to upgrade to 6070 ?
- beg, borrow or steal a set of FAS 9×0 filers (let’s say FAS 960)
- upgrade 880 to ONTAP 7.x if are already not on there
- do a head swap from 880 to 960
- upgrade the "new" 960 to 7.2RC2 or above
- do another head swap from FAS 960 to FAS 6070.
Also, 6070s do not support LRC connectors for disk shelves. You’ll have to swap them out with ESH (and of course ESH2)
Someone was saying that the 7.2 ONTAP is not coded to read the disk labels from FAS 880. I also heard that the future releases of ONTAP may support the 880 series..
